About this activity
Spend a day at a real jeweller's bench in Chiang Mai's Old City and leave with a piece of sterling silver jewellery you made with your own hands. This small-group class (up to 6 people) is designed for complete beginners: you sketch a ring or pendant idea, and a silversmith with more than 30 years at the bench shows you how to turn silver sheet and wire into that design. You'll saw, file and shape the metal, solder the parts together with a torch, hammer in texture if you like, then sand and polish until it shines. These are the same traditional hand techniques still used by independent studios and fine-jewellery workshops, so you get an honest look at how jewellery is actually made rather than a craft-kit version. Your instructor demonstrates each step, then hands over the tools and lets you work at your own pace, stepping in whenever you need a hand. Most guests finish one ring or pendant during the day. The class runs from 10:30 to 16:30 with a one-hour lunch break (lunch is not included, and there are plenty of cafés nearby). Sterling silver is charged separately by the gram, so you only pay for the metal your piece actually uses.
