The drive heads west toward Doi Suthep mountain, about 20 minutes, as city blocks give way to the leafy lanes around the university. Wat Umong: The Temple in the Forest Founded around 1297, Wat Umong does what no other temple in Chiang Mai does: it takes you underground. Buddha images wait at the end of cool brick tunnels beneath a massive bell-shaped chedi, while outside, gravel paths wander between tall trees hung with short Buddhist proverbs. This is still a working meditation monastery. Keep your voice low, watch the monks go about their day, and let the forest slow you down. Baan Kang Wat: The Village Where Artists Live and Work A five-minute drive away, Baan Kang Wat ("the village beside the temple") gathers around twenty studios, galleries and shops in two-storey wooden houses set around a garden amphitheater. Potters, bookbinders, illustrators and weavers actually work here, which changes everything: each object on the shelves has a face and a story behind it. This is also your lunch stop, with several small cafés and home-style kitchens to choose from. Optional: Make Your Own Souvenir Rather create than shop? The village studios run short hands-on workshops: ceramics, bookbinding, painting, sculpture, jewelry making and more. Most can be booked directly on site, depending on the day's availability, and you'll fly home with a piece nobody else owns, because you made it yourself. Return to Your Hotel When you're ready, your driver takes you back to your hotel, about four hours after pickup. Good to Know The order of stops can change with your departure time; lunch is always at the village. Meals and drinks are at your own expense.
